How to make a WooCommerce website faster

A structured approach to WooCommerce performance covering hosting, database work, themes, images, extensions, caching and checkout.

A slow WooCommerce store rarely has one cause. Hosting response, database queries, product images, theme code, extensions and third-party scripts all contribute. The right fix begins with measuring representative customer journeys rather than installing another optimisation plugin.

Test the pages that matter commercially

Measure popular collections, complex product pages, basket and checkout—not only the homepage. Use real-user data alongside laboratory tests where possible. Mobile visitors on ordinary connections often experience problems that disappear on an office computer.

Match hosting to the workload

WooCommerce pages can require database and PHP work that a static marketing page does not. Server resources, current software versions and database configuration matter. Better infrastructure cannot repair inefficient code, but underpowered hosting limits every other improvement.

Optimise catalogue imagery

Product photography is essential and can also dominate page weight. Generate appropriate sizes, use modern formats, compress sensibly and avoid loading gallery images before they are needed. Consistent image dimensions reduce layout movement while pages load.

Review themes and extensions

A general-purpose theme may ship features the store never uses. Extensions can add scripts, queries or remote requests to every page. Remove abandoned functionality, consolidate overlapping tools and measure the impact of important plugins before replacing them.

Cache without breaking commerce

Page, object and browser caching can reduce repeated work, but baskets, accounts and checkout contain customer-specific information. Configure exclusions carefully and test logged-in, discounted and recently updated product journeys. A cached page must never expose another customer’s data.

Challenge third-party scripts

Reviews, analytics, advertising, chat and personalisation services may account for much of the browser workload. Keep tools that produce clear value, load them with appropriate consent and remove scripts left behind by uninstalled services.

Protect conversion while improving speed

A faster page is useful because it reduces friction, not because it earns a perfect score. Check that payment methods, measurement and merchandising still work after every material change.
