Google Ads or ChatGPT Ads: where should your budget go?

A practical comparison of established keyword demand and conversational advertising, including reach, intent, measurement and when the channels can work together.

Google Ads and ChatGPT Ads can both place a business in front of somebody considering a decision, but they do not expose demand in the same way. Treating one as a direct replacement for the other misses the useful difference between them.

Google begins with an expressed search

Google Ads is built around a mature search market. Keyword planning can indicate the relative volume of searches, estimated click costs and competition, while live search-term data shows the language that actually triggered adverts.

This makes Google particularly useful when people already know how to describe the product or service they need. Campaigns can focus on defined searches, locations, schedules and landing pages, then measure calls, forms or purchases.

ChatGPT begins with conversational context

People often give ChatGPT more context than they would place in a short search box. They may explain the situation, ask for alternatives and refine the decision over several messages. According to OpenAI’s advertiser guidance, ad selection can consider the current conversation’s context and intent alongside the advert, landing page and advertiser-provided context hints.

Those context hints are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee delivery in a particular conversation. That makes conventional keyword search volume a poor like-for-like measure for ChatGPT Ads.

Do not invent a volume comparison

Google has established tools for estimating keyword demand. ChatGPT Ads is a newer environment organised around relevant conversational situations, and OpenAI does not provide a directly equivalent public keyword-volume dataset. A responsible plan should acknowledge that difference instead of presenting two numbers as if they measure the same behaviour.

For ChatGPT Ads, early planning should focus on eligibility, relevant use cases, likely customer situations, landing-page readiness and a controlled test budget. Actual delivery and conversion evidence can then replace assumptions.

The creative job is different

A Google search advert needs to match a concise expression of intent and make a strong case against nearby alternatives. A ChatGPT advert needs to feel useful in a richer conversation. Clear benefit-led copy, distinct creative variations and a destination that continues the specific topic are more useful than recycling a list of search headlines.

Measurement still comes back to commercial outcomes

Both channels can report advertising activity, but clicks are not the finished result. Conversion tracking, campaign parameters, lead quality and revenue are needed to judge whether either platform is creating worthwhile customers. OpenAI’s current documentation describes impression, click, spend and conversion reporting for ChatGPT Ads; availability and features can continue to evolve.

They can occupy different parts of one strategy

Google can capture established demand from people using recognisable search language. ChatGPT Ads can test relevant moments while people explore a problem and compare routes forward. A business may use one, both or neither depending on audience, economics and the quality of its destination pages.

Noviom Labs manages Google Ads and ChatGPT Ads as distinct services within a connected paid advertising strategy. The Google Ads profit calculator can help assess whether an existing campaign is covering its real costs.
