01
A sold-out card game becomes always available.
The digital edition carries Bloxo’s bold shapes and colours into an experience players can open wherever they are, without depending on physical stock.
-
02
Play Bloxo against the computer.
Single-player mode lets someone play against a computer opponent and select one of three difficulty levels to match the challenge to their experience.
-
03
Bring up to four friends into an online game.
A focused game lobby lets the host choose two, three or four players before creating a private online match.
-
04
Share one phone without sharing your hand.
Local multiplayer pauses between turns and hides the game until the next player confirms they are ready to receive the device.
THE BRIEF
Bloxo asked us to translate its physical card game into an online mobile experience without losing the simple rules, colourful identity and competitive decisions that made the original so enjoyable.
The digital product needed to solve two practical problems: the game should remain available even when physical stock runs out, and existing players should be able to take Bloxo with them and play wherever they are.
THE PROBLEM
A successful physical launch created demand that stock alone could not always meet. At the same time, playing the card game required the deck and other players to be in the same place.
Moving Bloxo to a screen introduced a different challenge. The app needed to interpret valid placements, calculate scores and manage private hands while remaining immediately understandable to adults and younger players.
OBJECTIVES
- Create a digital Bloxo experience that is not limited by physical stock.
- Preserve the matching, placement and scoring decisions of the card game.
- Offer single-player, online and same-device multiplayer modes.
- Let friends create private online games for up to four players.
- Protect each player’s hand during pass-the-phone games.
- Add sensible controls for a family audience that can include children.
- Support owners of the physical game with a purpose-built score calculator.
OUR APPROACH
We began with the core loop: draw a card, find a valid position, build matching colour groups and keep an accurate score. The digital board, hand, deck, discard pile and turn state were designed to make those rules visible without crowding a small screen.
Each mode then applied the same game logic in a different setting. Computer opponents provide solo play at three difficulty levels, online rooms connect remote friends, and local multiplayer manages several private hands on one device.
THE SOLUTION
The finished app gives Bloxo three distinct ways to play. A single player can face the computer and select a difficulty suited to their experience. Friends can create an online game for two, three or four players, while local multiplayer lets a group share one phone.
For same-device games, a dedicated pass screen hides the board and hand until the next player confirms they are ready. We also created a game calculator so people using the physical cards can keep score in the Bloxo app.
KEY FUNCTIONALITY
- Single-player games against computer opponents
- Three computer difficulty levels
- Private online games for up to four players
- Same-device local multiplayer
- Pass-the-phone privacy between local turns
- Digital enforcement of placement and scoring rules
- Live player scores, turn state, deck and discard information
- Calculator for the physical Bloxo card game
- Locked player names once an online game begins
- Player reporting and family-audience safeguards
CHALLENGES
The largest product challenge was carrying a tactile, spatial card game into a compact mobile interface. Every legal move, matching edge and score needed to be evaluated consistently while the board remained easy to read and touch.
Because Bloxo is a family game and children may play, online interaction required additional care. Player names cannot be changed during a game, reducing the opportunity to use them as an improvised chat channel, and reporting tools provide a route for inappropriate behaviour to be flagged.
OUTCOME
Bloxo now has a digital product that extends the physical game rather than merely reproducing it. It can remain available regardless of card stock, travel with its players and support solo practice, remote friends or a group sharing one device.
The experience also gives the original card game a useful companion through its score calculator. Across both formats, players practise arithmetic through scoring and spatial reasoning through deciding which cards can be placed where.
