What is Shopify, and which businesses is it best suited to?

Shopify is a hosted ecommerce platform. It provides the administration area, storefront foundations, checkout, hosting and security infrastructure needed to sell online. A business pays a subscription and works within Shopify’s platform rather than maintaining the core commerce software itself.
What Shopify handles
Products, collections, stock, discounts, orders and customer records are managed from one back office. Shopify also takes responsibility for hosting the platform, maintaining the core software and keeping its checkout infrastructure available. That removes a meaningful amount of technical administration from the retailer.
Where Shopify is particularly useful
Shopify suits brands that want to concentrate on products, merchandising and customer acquisition without owning a large technical estate. It can support a new direct-to-consumer store, an established catalogue or a growing retailer selling through several channels.
A managed platform still needs thoughtful implementation
Signing up does not create a persuasive shop. The information architecture, product data, photography, theme, navigation, delivery rules and analytics all need deliberate decisions. Apps can extend the platform, but each one introduces cost, data access and another dependency to maintain.
The main trade-off is control
Shopify’s standardisation is part of its value: common commerce problems are handled consistently. The same boundaries can become restrictive when a business relies on unusual pricing, complex procurement or highly bespoke fulfilment. Shopify Plus and custom applications extend the platform, but not every requirement should be forced into it.
Shopify is not only for small shops
The platform can support substantial retailers, international storefronts and custom integrations. Suitability depends less on headline turnover than on operational complexity, internal capability and the level of control the business genuinely needs.
