What is Laravel, and why do businesses use it?

A clear explanation of Laravel, what a web framework provides and why it is a dependable foundation for bespoke business software.

Laravel is an open-source PHP framework used to build web applications, APIs and digital platforms. It provides a well-organised foundation for common software requirements, allowing a development team to concentrate on the rules that make a product valuable instead of rebuilding basic plumbing for every project.

A framework provides structure

Laravel includes established approaches for routing, database access, validation, authentication, background jobs, email and testing. These conventions help developers understand where behaviour belongs and make an application easier to maintain as its features and team grow.

It is supported by a mature ecosystem

Laravel has extensive documentation, an active community and a large collection of maintained first-party tools. Businesses are not relying on an obscure internal framework understood by one supplier. That does not remove the need for good engineering, but it makes knowledge and support easier to find.

It suits software built around business rules

Customer portals, booking platforms, internal systems, SaaS products and integrations need more than editable pages. Laravel can model users, permissions, processes and data directly, making it useful where the workflow is part of the business rather than an add-on to a brochure website.

It does not dictate the user interface

Laravel can serve traditional web pages, work with Livewire, provide an API to a JavaScript interface or support a Flutter mobile app. The presentation approach can be selected around the product instead of being forced by the backend.

Laravel is not necessary for every website

A straightforward content website may be delivered more economically with WordPress, Webflow or another managed platform. Laravel becomes valuable when bespoke data, permissions, automation or integration justify custom software.
