How many Shopify apps does your store really need?

A practical way to review Shopify apps by business value, storefront performance, data access, cost and operational risk.

Published 3 September 2026 · Updated 3 September 2026

There is no correct number of Shopify apps. A store should have as many as it needs to deliver valuable functionality—and no more. The problem begins when apps are installed as experiments, overlap with one another or remain after the team stops using them.

Give every app a named purpose and owner

Record the requirement, subscription cost, data it can access and the person responsible for it. If nobody can explain what an app contributes, investigate before renewing it. Removing an app may also require cleaning up theme code or exported data.

Check whether Shopify already provides the feature

The platform continues to add native capabilities. An app installed several years ago may now duplicate part of Shopify or the theme. Consolidation can reduce cost and make the store easier for staff to understand.

Measure storefront impact

Some apps inject scripts, styles and interface elements into public pages. Several individually small additions can make product pages slow or visually crowded. Test before and after installation, especially on mobile and slower connections.

Understand the data relationship

Review what customer, order or catalogue information leaves Shopify, why it is required and how deletion requests are handled. Privacy policies and consent configuration should reflect the services actually in use.

Consider operational dependency

If an app controls subscriptions, fulfilment or customer communication, an outage can affect revenue and service. Understand support arrangements, exports and what the team would do if the provider changed price or stopped operating.

Custom development is not always the answer

A dependable app serving a common requirement can be safer and better value than bespoke code. Custom work makes sense when the feature differentiates the business or when existing apps introduce unacceptable compromise.

Noviom Labs can audit, configure and integrate Shopify apps as part of our ongoing ecommerce support, with recommendations based on the store’s actual commercial and operational needs.
