How can Shopify connect to your stock, fulfilment and business systems?

How Shopify integrations work, which system should own each record and what makes a connection dependable after launch.

An ecommerce store rarely operates alone. Products may begin in a stock system, orders may pass to a warehouse and customer activity may feed accounting, support or marketing tools. A good integration removes repeated work without hiding failures from the team.

Define the source of truth

Decide which system owns products, prices, stock, customers and fulfilment status. If two systems can overwrite the same field without clear rules, errors become difficult to explain. Ownership should reflect the real business process rather than technical convenience.

Use supported connectors where they fit

An established connector can solve a common integration more economically than custom development. Check the exact fields, update frequency, limits and failure handling rather than relying on a marketplace description.

APIs and webhooks support custom workflows

Shopify APIs allow authorised applications to work with store data. Webhooks can notify another system when events occur, such as an order being created. Custom integrations need secure credentials, version management and respect for platform rate limits.

Plan for failure and recovery

Networks time out and external services become unavailable. Important integrations need retries, duplicate protection, logging and alerts. Staff should be able to see what failed and replay work safely rather than discovering missing orders from a customer complaint.

Keep private data proportionate

Transfer only the fields each system needs. Understand where customer information is stored, who can access it and how retention or deletion requests flow through connected platforms.

Test operational exceptions

Refunds, partial fulfilments, cancellations, bundles and edited orders reveal weaknesses that a straightforward test purchase will not. Include the people who perform the work when defining and accepting the integration.
