Tips For Working From Home

Working from home? Woooo. In light of recent events much of the population may be working from home for the first time ever. Exciting ey, a new environment, and just think how much you’ll get done around the house…

Oh yeah, WORKING from home, don’t forget that part.

Believe it or not, working from home can be very difficult, so here are a few tips to help you get started.

#1

Get Up Early

Don’t wake up 5 minutes before you start, set your alarm for the same time as normal and stick to your usual routine. Your normal morning routine and commute to work wakes you up in preparation for your day, make sure you are still getting this same stimulus in the morning and get started on time.

#2

Make A List

The hardest part of working from home is focusing on work jobs and not home jobs. Make a list of all the things you need to do that day and make sure you complete everything on the list. Prioritise the list in order of importance and this will also help you with a structure to your day. It might be a good idea to make a home to-do list, as well as a work to-do list, which will keep you on top of things in all aspects of life.

#3

Keep In Touch

Self Isolating doesn’t mean zero contact. Keep in touch with your superiors and colleges and provide updates of your work and ask what needs doing. Working from home can be boring, and keeping in touch with each other can help keep your spirits high.

#4

Set Aside A Space

Do not work from your bed! This is the worst thing you could do. Set aside a space that is your work place. Keep your rest areas as rest areas, somewhere where you can go to relax and forget about work. Your work space is then your productive area.

#5

Dont Work From Bed

This point is so important, we’re saying it twice. Set aside a working space that is separate from your rest areas, especially your bed. It may seem like a luxury, in bed on a Monday at 11am?! Don’t forget you are still being paid to work, you’re not being paid to sleep!

#6

Block Social Media

Or at least limit it. You can easily spend a few hours a day scrolling through your news feed and keeping up with all your friends who are also now enjoying working/playing from home. Will power is key!

Take A Break

Just like you would in the office, take regular breaks away from your desk. Get up and walk about and get some fresh air. Just because you are self isolating, doesn’t mean you can’t go outside. Of course, make sure you follow the advice regarding social distancing, but fresh air during the day is so important, so go for a walk and clear your head. Did someone say tea???

#8

Finish On Time

Just as important as getting up early, its equally important to finish on time. You need to get some downtime in the evenings away from work. That’s why it is so important to have a dedicated work space.
